Leatherware’s relationship with Mitre began in 1971 when the latter sent the former panels sets of six footballs to be stitched and returned. The balls were the now legendary Mitre Multiplex and Leatherware began making a hundred balls a week. Moving to new premises in 1976 the business continued to grow. By the early 1980’s the company was stitching various models from the Mitre range and now stitches all top Mitre footballs.

 

The end of 1980’s also saw the end of cowhide leather footballs. Technology had allowed the development of synthetics and polyurethane leather is now one of the best materials available for footballs. Leatherware are honored to now be producing the top class Ultimax football for Mitre and are proud to have hand-stitched the Mitre football which appears in the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest ever, With the diameter of around eight feet the majority of its thirty-two panels were stitched from the inside!

 

From the 100 balls a week during the 1970’s, Leatherware are now manufacturing between three to five thousand per day, thanks to the advancement of manufacturing techniques. Leatherware is hoping to expand and encompass bladder producing in the near future. The manufacturing process takes place in nine halls on two storeys,

 

The present Leatherware has come a long way,  the company is now ISO 9002 certified it is also a leading member and is 100% in compliance with the ILO program for child labour according to the Atlanta agreement. An in-house testing facility allows for through research and development on footballs and results are used to produce Top quality products. Leatherware believes safety comes first and to facilitate that a metal detector apparatus will be in operation from April 2000 to detect any broken needles imbedded in footballs which can lead to severe injury during play.

 

Leatherware’s customers will be able to get online 24hrs information about their products order status and daily reports from our live application file server in July 2000.
